Moving Countdown Checklist

Use this helpful checklist on the lead up to your move.

Two to Four Weeks Before

Packing

Before you begin packing decide if there are any items you can dispose of. Consider a local auction, car boot, garage sale or donations to your local charity shop.

If you plan to do the packing yourself ensure you obtain the necessary materials. We can supply boxes for you *FREE of charge. We suggest you begin packing at least two weeks before your move. Clearly label all boxes with their contents and the room of your new property they are to be places in.

Relatives & Friends

Go through your address book and send out change of address cards.

Bank

Notify your bank of your change of address and consider changing your account to a branch nearer your new address.

Credit/Store Cards

Provide your new address to these companies. There is usually a section on your statement to complete in such circumstances. Remember to notify payment protection insurance companies, if applicable.

Standing Orders/Direct Debits

Provide your new address to any companies to which you pay standing orders or direct debits, or with which you have purchase agreements or loans.

Stocks and Shares

Notify your stockbroker or each individual Company Register.

Car

Get it serviced, particularly if travelling to your new address will be a long journey.

Driving Licence

Complete Section 1 on your licence and return it to the DVLC, Swansea, SA99 1AB.

Motor Vehicle Registration

Send the Registration Document to the Vehicle Licencing Centre, Swansea, SA99 1AB.

Mail Re-direction

The Royal Mail will require 7 days notice. Application Forms are available from all Post Offices or you can phone for one to be sent to you on 08457 77 78 88.

Telephone and Mobile Providers

Contact providers including any internet accounts to advise of your change of address and the date from which you want your new number to operate, or to transfer your current number. You will need to provide at least two weeks notice.

TV Licence

Fill in the change of address section on your existing TV licence and post off.

TV Rental/Sky/Cable

Rented sets can normally be transfered to your new address and account details moved to your local branch. Notify Sky or relevant cable company of your intention to move and your new address.

Doctor/Dentist

De-register if moving to another area and research alteratives nearer you new address. Remember even if you are moving to another area within the same town you will need to register with a local doctor's surgery.

Liaise with the hospital if undergoing treatment and ensure you have adequate provisions of medication at last you until after your move.

Private Healthcare

Provide your new address to these companies or alternatively research new schemes.

Inland Revenue

Notify your local tax office quoting your reference number (this can be found on your payslip or P60).

Primium Bonds

Write to the Premium Bonds & National Savings, General Corrospondence, Blackpool, FY3 9YP, quoting your bonds number.

National Insurance/DSS Benefits

Write to your local DSS office, providing your full name, date of birth and full National Insurance Number.

Pension

Advise your local Post Office or private sheme of your change of address.

Insurances

Notify your broker or individual insurance companies: motor, household contents, life and any other insurance policies.

Local Authority

Notify relevant authorities of both your current area and the area to which you are moving regarding concil tax and electrol registration.

Subscriptions

Notify all organisations/clubs/charities to which you subscribe of your new address.

Hotels

If you need hotel accommodation during the course of your move, book your hotel well in advance, particularly if your move occurs during the summer months.

Loft and Attics

Check the contents and dispose of any unwanted items.

Schools

Notify the school of leaving date(s) and advise new schools as soon as possible.

Pets

Make arrangements to book pets into kennels/cattery, etc. or for friends/relatives to look after them during the move. Arrange for transfer of you pets records to the new vet.

One Week Before

Electricity and Gas

Contact your existing energy suppliers to advise of the date when you will be moving, giving at least 48 hours notice.

Water

At least 48 hours notice is required by both your existing and new authority to arrange for disconnection and re-connection of supply.

Library

Make sure you return all books that you have on loan.

Milk/Papers/Window Cleaner

Settle outstanding accounts and cancel supplies.

Dry Cleaning

Collect all remaining items.

Children

If possible, arrange childcare for the day of the move.

Survival Kit

Pack a box for arrival at your new home to include light bulbs, toilet rolls, candles, screwdriver and pliers, matches, kitchen towels, cash and note of important numbers. Keep this in the boot of your car.

Keys

Ensure that the keys for your new home are going to be available on time and determine where you will need to collect then from.

Fridge/Freezer

Empty, defrost and dry out.

Parking

Resolve parking requirements. Sort out lift access if you live in a flat.

One Day To Go

Washing Machine/Dishwasher

Empty, disconnect and drain pipes. Secure the drum of the washing machine with the original manufacture's transit brackets.

Refreshments

Arrange for refreshments to be available for the next day - remember your cooker may be disconnected. Also ensure you have planned your evening meal on the day of your move - it may be easier to eat out or have a take-away.

Have a good night's sleep!!

Moving Day

Refreshments

It may be a good idea to keep refreshments flowing for everyone involved with the move. It is physically demanding work.

Duvets/Quilts/Bedding

Remove all bedding, and ensure that when packed, these are clearly labelled for immediate unpacking for your first night in your new home.

Children

Settle children with their carer. If they are staying with you during the course of your move organise a separate, safe room with a few toys and treats. Older children could be assigned specific tasks such as packing their own personal box.

Provide Clear Instructions

Show the Team Leader around the house and identify anything that you DO NOT want to go.

Last Check

Once the van is loaded, walk around the house garage, garden, etc. to ensure all items have been removed. Agree an approximate time to meet at the new address.

Utility Meters

Before leaving make a note of all relvant meter readings and arrange for key transfer as agreed. On arrival at your new home make a note of the meter readings.

Positioning of items in your New Home

Show the SmoothMove UK Team Leader the layout of your new home. It may be helpful to label the enterance door of each room. Be on hand to advise the team on the placement of items in the correct positions within the rooms.
